Hints for Autoclave Users

Ronco Technical Services has serviced hundreds of autoclaves with great care and pride. We like to see our repairs last a long time. That makes us happy and saves our customers $$$. Please take a moment to read what we have learned over the years. Hopefully these “helpful hints” will prove beneficial to you.

• DO NOT allow anyone who has not read the operating manual to operate the autoclave

• NEVER use anything but DISTILLED water in your sterilizer.

• ALWAYS replace the reservoir cap after filling and keep the chamber door closed when not in use to keep dust from getting into your steam system and clogging it.

• Sterilize only CLEAN items.

• DO NOT use cloth drapes that have been washed with CHLORINE BLEACH. Chlorine can destroy a stainless steel chamber.

• CLEAN your sterilizer on a weekly basis using cleaners provided by the autoclave manufacturer.

• ALWAYS fill with water to the fill line indicated in the chamber . . . no more, no less.

• NEVER leave an operating autoclave unattended for more than a few minutes.

• If the vent or fill cycle takes longer than normal, REPLACE the filter stone found at rear of the chamber underneath the bottom tray. (Pelton & Crane models only.)

• FILTERS, DOOR GASKETS, AND CLEANER are available from RONCO TECHNICAL SERVICES, INC.

• CALL US. We are an authorized service center for most major brands, Pelton & Crane, Tuttnauer, etc. We can answer most of your technical questions having to do with autoclaves, anesthesia machines, EKG machines, dental units, centrifuges, etc.

PREPARATION OF MATERIALS

• INSTRUMENTS – Clean and rinse thoroughly, wrap or bag and place on trays.

• SYRINGES & NEEDLES – Take syringes apart, wash thoroughly. Wrap or bag each part separately. Cover entire tray with a double-thickness muslin cover.

• FABRICS & DRESSINGS – Fold into convenient packets. Always fold loosely. Avoid making multiple layers and never roll. Never use canvas as a covering. Wrap in muslin on trays. Canvas will not allow steam penetration. Do not overload chamber.

CLEANING CHAMBER

• Mix three ounces of Omni-Cleaner Plus per quart of water.

• Drain reservoir and add enough cleaning solution to run a cycle. For extremely dirty autoclaves, solution may be increased to four ounces per quart and may require two cleaning cycles.

• Run one twenty-minute cycle in normal manner. Instruments should not be sterilized while cleaning autoclave.

• Drain cleaning solution from autoclave and reservoir. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Fill autoclave again and run one rinse cycle for fifteen minutes. Do not use cleaning solution for rinse cycle; use fresh water.

• Refill reservoir with distilled water and autoclave is ready for use.

• For Validator autoclaves, if H2O or fail signal occurs immediately after cleaning unit, restart and fill chamber by hand, restart cycle.
